SUSANNE ELSTNER
Precious? / Germany
The actual series Floating Bowls consists of five objects, vessels of wood-turned charred larch wood. They vary in size and appearance. I make the charcoal myself in an elaborate process and I prefer the wood of the larch for its lively year rings.
I let myself be inspired by the shapes resulting from the laborious wood-turning and charring process. I cut them up and reassemble them in a playful way. Sometimes it’s the volume that features prominently; or the interlocking of several shapes; sometimes it’s tilting them; or their impressively curved openings.
The lightness of the Floating Bowls is of essential concern. I make a delicate frame in silver that corresponds to the shape and size of their base giving them the floating appearance and allowing them to be worn as brooches.
