SURABHI SAHGAL

Precious? / India

I am a jewellery-maker transitioning from architectural practice towards narrative objects and speculative adornment. I see my current practice as an exploratory journey into the development of jewellery and objects as stimuli for socio-cultural expression, inquiry and intrigue.

I employ different methods and materials in the creation of my work; however, I am primarily engaged with copper electroforming and patination. Responding to issues of the environment as well as socio-cultural paradoxes, my work aims at confronting my audience with tangible narratives of growth and decay; towards challenging conformist aesthetic sensibilities and values.

Having questioned the premise of jewellery as an art form over the last two years, both in academic and professional settings, I am keen on establishing a new position for contemporary jewellery practice in India – extending the discipline beyond its conventional roles of adornment and investment.
