JOEY ZHONG
Emerging Talent / UK
Born and raised in Sydney, Australia, I am currently a first year Jewellery Design student at Central Saint Martins in London. My practice explores the expansive notion of what jewellery is and what it can be, as well as attempting to subvert or question the familiar through both concept and material. Jewellery is a distinctive medium centred around the body which marries elements of art, fashion and product design, allowing not only the expression of my ideas but the intimate experience of them by others.
I am heavily influenced and shaped by contemporary art, particularly Australian and Chinese contemporary artists as they resonate with my experience of cultural hybridity as a Chinese Australian. Some artists who I have referenced in my recent work include Cai Guo Qiang’s gunpowder paintings, Lindy Lee’s flung bronze and Rosalie Gascoigne’s found object assemblages.
To me, jewellery is a form of self expression and story telling which transcends beyond a single category of design.
